Happy Days Are Here Again Valentine More than New York Fashion for the Day by Marc Jacobs

Supper Design by Marc Jacobs for the Happy Days Are Here Again Valentine Set Up by 2014-15
With inches of slushy snow on the ground outside, guests at the Marc Jacobs Fall 2014 show were greeted by a skyscape of fluffy white clouds lowered from the ceiling of the Lexington Armory. Not only did every showgoer get their own individual foam front row seat, but we each had a beautiful calla lily laid across our show notes. Gesture of peace? Marc wants to wish us early Valentine's Day? But after the show, it felt more like a gesture of serenity from the designer, who was responsible for only his own eponymous collection this season for the first time in 16 years, after passing the torch successfully at Marc by Marc Jacobs to Luella Bartley and Katie Hillier and exiting his longtime role as creative director at Louis Vuitton.

As Jessica Lange intoned the words to Happy Days Are Here Again over the speakers, models glided by with candy-color bobs in the softest colors of, well, clouds: white, pale pinks, dove gray, stones, camels, and mauve (yes, we know this is a Fall/Winter show). A late '60s silhouette reigned supreme with long tunics and dresses over flared bootcut pants, paired with square-toe boots and chain-strap bags. Long sinuous midi dresses with abstract geometric patterns rendering in glittering sequins were an unexpectedly pretty take on evening, while a daisy embroidered dress and degradé candy-color shearling jackets were simply sweet. If this is Marc having a happy day, then people, be nice to him — being in a good mood certainly suits him.
